John Thomas died 16th June 1920 and soon after his death Doris and Jack were sent back to England alone to be looked after by relatives. Doris described how they had food for the train journey across Canada and labels on their coats. They were met at Liverpool but I understand the relatives had very little notice of their arrival and she told me how she remembered sitting on the quayside and officials speaking to them before their relatives arrived.  Doris went to live with her Auntie Annie (sister of her mother Lucy Ellen) and her husband William Crowther. It was not an ideal arrangement as Annie and Willie were childless and did not particularly want children.  Doris went to All Saints Church School, Skircoat Green, and was then apprenticed at Wadsworth, Furriers, Rawson Street, Halifax. She was an excellent Dressmaker.  Jack went to live with the Shaw family in Copley.  Lucy Ellen and Allan (now 16) returned to England in 1935 and Lucy Ellen married Uncle Willie on the morning of Doris’ wedding giving Lucy Ellen a home and Willie a housekeeper.
